Hi I’m Bones. Welcome to my site.
That’s a pretty lame way to introduce one’s new blog in 2025, isn’t it? I think so. Figured I’d go ahead and set a nice low bar as I kick things off, and give you a little taste of what little you can expect as I move forward with this thing. It’s also the same 7 words that I used to start off my very first blog back in 2003. Which was, shit, over two decades ago. Back then, I’d already created a couple cheap static personal websites where I could bask in self-indulgence, but 2003 was my first crack at a true blog. One where I would write incessantly about myself and whatever interested me at the time. The second post, for instance, began with the far-from-clever opening of “Beer. Sweet sweet beer.” Yeah, that first blog started off a bit clunky.
I eventually got my legs, though, and I managed to keep that early blog going for years, and it was even fairly popular. It then morphed into a few different blogs that continued for another few years, mostly following the same theme of “things that Bones likes.” This was back in what I consider to be the golden age of the internet, when blogging was the hot way of expressing yourself, and we’d all have our favorite blogs saved as bookmarks in our browser, and we’d click through them each day checking to see which ones had a new post. Then Facebook came along and beat the shit out of us bloggers, and that was that. It was a good time while it lasted though, and I’m a bit nostalgic for those days. And I’m sure to be reminded daily how those days are very much gone when each new entry that I post on this new blog is greeted by a nice chorus of crickets. That’s ok.
My goal is simple. I just want to do some writing. I self-published a novel about 4 or 5 years ago, which was a gratifying experience (it’s called JUDY and it’s available on Amazon. Check it out!) and I wanted to do it again. I recently sat down with a rough plan for a new novel and I was going to fill it with all kinds of high falutin ideas around growing older and wiser, mellowing out and finding joy, etc, all within a cool little metaphorical tale about an alien. It was going to be sort of a thematic counter to my first book that was a hell of a lot less optimistic. About two weeks into that ambitious exercise, though, I’d managed to write a whole lot of words about a couple of guys sitting at a bar. That’s all. Even I was bored by it. And I love bars. My writing was rusty and I realized that, despite having some rather “large” ideas for the story, I really didn’t have anything to say. So I put that story to the side for now. Or to put it another way, I gave up. That’s ok.
That’s where this blog comes in. My attempt to get un-rusty. And what better (and easy) way to do so than to return to the days of self-indulgence where I talk incessantly about myself and whatever interests me at the time. Which will probably be quite similar to what interested me 20 years ago – beer, books, and good tunes. And maybe a sprinkling of some new stuff which 20-years-ago-Bones would not have predicted, like the joy of spending time in the woods with my wife and dog. And travel. And absinthe. Should be fun.
And thus concludes blog post #1 on my new modest little website. Rusty indeed. But that’s ok. It was nice to throw some words around again. Hopefully I’ll make this a habit. If not, thanks for reading my first and only post!
